Lofoten Hiking – 3 Days Adventure

Camping In Lofoten

The Norwegian “everyman’s right,” or “allemannsretten” in Norwegian, is a unique and cherished cultural tradition that grants everyone, locals and visitors alike, the freedom to roam and enjoy nature responsibly. It’s a legal right that allows you to hike, camp, forage, and explore vast areas of uncultivated land, forests, mountains, and waterways, regardless of who owns the land.

Here are some key aspects of the everyman’s right:

  • Freedom to roam: You’re free to wander on uncultivated land, including hiking, camping, skiing, and berry picking.
  • Respect for nature: You’re expected to leave no trace, pack out all trash, and avoid disturbing wildlife and livestock.
  • Camping restrictions: You can camp for up to two nights in one place without permission, as long as you’re at least 150 meters away from homes or cabins.
  • Foraging: You can pick berries, mushrooms, and wildflowers for personal use, as long as they’re not protected species.
  • Water access: You can swim, fish, and boat in most waterways, even if they cross private land.

It’s important to remember that the everyman’s right comes with responsibilities. You’re expected to respect nature, landowners, and other people enjoying the outdoors. By following the simple guidelines, you can experience the breathtaking beauty of Norway’s natural landscapes in a way that’s both sustainable and respectful.

If you’re planning a trip to Norway and want to take advantage of the everyman’s right, be sure to research the specific regulations and restrictions that apply to the areas you’ll be visiting. The Norwegian Environment Agency provides detailed information and guidelines on their website

Camping Sites in Lofoten

Since you can stay almost anywhere with a tent or camper, the only question is where to camp if you want a shower, a proper toilet or want to see more people. Here I have put together a link to Google which campsites there are in Lofoten.

Check your flight hour

Upon landing in Bodø, double-check your flight schedule and factor in some buffer time. If your arrival is in the later hours, you might need to book an overnight stay before kicking off your adventure. Remember, your first day’s trek is a doozy—1000 meters of elevation gain and 17 kilometers of terrain that could take up to 10 hours to conquer. Stumbling through the dark with a heavy pack is not exactly my idea of fun, so plan accordingly to avoid any unwanted surprises.

Pro tip: Treat yourself to a cozy hotel stay on your first night. You’ll thank me later when you’re well-rested and ready to tackle the trails with a spring in your step!

My Hotel in Bodo: Smarthotel this Hotel is very close to the Harbor where the Ferry starts

Ferry to Moskenes

The ferry from Bodo to Moskenes is free for pedestrians. You just have to scan a QR code at the entrance to the ferry and register. You can reserve a seat for the trip in advance, but you will have to pay for it. Depending on the season, the ferry is not really full

Get a gas canister

madeira hike

For me, the biggest challenge was getting a gas cartridge for my gas cooker. Because I didn’t land until 7pm and didn’t get out of the airport until 8pm. All the shops were already closed.

My tip is that you go to a gas station. I wrote to the owner here on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CircleKOlavVsGate/
